Chapter 3 · Where to sleep and the daily rhythm

Luggage transfer: don't want to carry everything every day?

Luggage transfer services take your backpack from today's lodging to your next stop, starting at around €6–7 per bag per stage. Here's how Correos, Jacotrans, Caminofácil, Pilbeo, and Tuitrans compare on routes, prices, and weight limits—note that in winter, Correos only runs from Sarria and Tui.

When should you use luggage transfer?

When your knees or back are hurting, when you want to walk light for a few days, or when you don't want to carry a big pack at all. Many pilgrims only send their bag on stages with steep climbs or descents and carry it the rest of the time.

How does it work?

Book the day before, leave your bag in the morning, and pick it up at your next stop in the afternoon.

  1. Book the day before and tell the company where you're staying today and tomorrow.
  2. Before setting out in the morning, leave your backpack in the designated spot at your lodging with a tag or envelope attached (usually showing tomorrow's lodging and your payment details).
  3. Arrive at your next stop in the afternoon and pick up your bag at your lodging.

How to choose?

Can you still get the Compostela if you send your luggage?

Yes. The Pilgrim's Office cares about how you travel and how far you go—there's no rule saying you have to carry your own pack, as long as you walk the stages yourself.

What should you still carry with you?

Water, rain gear, sun protection, some snacks, ID, your credencial (pilgrim passport), phone, and a power bank. Your luggage won't arrive until the afternoon, so anything you need during the day goes in your daypack.
